Get to know Nick Carrick

I joined Mum and Dad in the family business at the beginning of 2018, after several years working across a range of hands-on roles — farming various animals, private gardening, commercial landscaping, and machinery operation. Starting at Carricks was my first "inside job", and while I sometimes miss the crisp winter mornings outdoors, I definitely appreciate the four walls and air conditioning when it hits 30 degrees and the sun is beating down.

My role in the business has grown significantly since I first became an adviser. I started out with limited knowledge of insurance and KiwiSaver, offering fairly basic advice. These days, I provide comprehensive and personalised insurance, KiwiSaver, and investment advice. I also work with clients on their financial and retirement plans, and support them through business ownership and growth. I’ve found a real passion for helping people find financial solutions — and I’ve learnt so much along the way. Being a sounding board for clients with big dreams and aspirations is something I feel incredibly lucky and privileged to do. There’s nothing more satisfying than seeing that moment when someone realises their goals are within reach — often with just a gentle nudge in the right direction.

On the flip side, knowing my clients are well protected during tough times is just as rewarding. Claims are a major part of our work, and while they often come from difficult circumstances, it’s a great feeling to see an insurance plan do exactly what it’s meant to. Seeing a client — or their family — receive the financial support they need reminds me why we do what we do. It's not always easy, but it's always worth it.

In 2022, I became a shareholder and co-director of our family business — the proudest moment in my career so far. I’m incredibly grateful for the support and strong relationship I have with my parents. Getting to work with two of my best friends every day is something I never take for granted. (And for those wondering — in nearly eight years of working together, we’ve never had an argument. How good is that!)

Outside of work, I share life with my amazing wife, Lia. She co-manages an early childcare centre in Morrinsville and is one of the kindest, smartest people I know. She’s also a superstar mum to our daughter, Daisy. I feel incredibly lucky to raise our kids alongside her. Daisy is nearly two and she’s the most incredible little person I’ve ever met. Becoming her dad has made me a better person and reminded me to slow down and enjoy the small things. Daisy is set to become a big sister at the end of July, which is an exciting time for our family.

If I can get Lia her morning coffee and breakfast, it usually earns me a bit of time to sneak out for a hunt, a mountain bike ride, or a workout in the home gym. On weekends, you’ll find me carving out time to watch the Warriors during the NRL season. And if the to-do list around the house isn’t too long, there’ll often be some smoked meat on the go to enjoy alongside the game.
