Tool Theft: How Kiwi Tradies Can Stay One Step Ahead

Tool theft is a real concern for New Zealand tradespeople, and at Carricks, we know the value of your tools goes far beyond their price tag. They are the backbone of your work and your livelihood.

That is why we wanted to share some practical advice, originally published on Covernote, about reducing the risk of theft and making sure your insurance cover gives you confidence.

Smarter Physical Security

Improving how you secure tools, whether on-site or in your vehicle, is one of the most effective steps you can take. Choose toolbox locks that resist bolt cutters and grinders. If you store tools in work vehicles, look at installing locking cabinets with reinforced hinges and quality padlocks. For larger items such as ladders or power equipment, a hardened-steel security chain provides another level of protection.

Engrave, Inventory and Track

Making your tools identifiable and less attractive to thieves can make a big difference. Engrave your business name or contact details to help with recovery and discourage resale. Keep a detailed record of each tool, including serial numbers, receipts, and photographs. This makes insurance claims easier and faster. If you rely on high-value equipment, GPS trackers can serve as both a deterrent and a way to recover stolen tools.

Vehicle Security

Work vehicles are often targeted, particularly over weekends. Installing alarm systems that alert you to unauthorised entry, along with glass-break or movement sensors, can add an extra layer of protection.

Understand Your Insurance

Standard home-insurance policies will not cover your tools, which is why specialist trade insurance is so important. These policies typically include mobile and portable tools and often provide “new-for-old” replacements. Talk to your broker about the details of your cover. Ask what is included, under what circumstances you are protected, and what exclusions might apply, such as employee theft or tools stolen from an unsecured vehicle.

Why Specialist Advice Helps

If you are unsure about your cover or want to strengthen your risk management, it pays to speak with a broker who understands the needs of tradies. They can review your current policy and recommend improvements, often at no extra cost.

At Carricks, we know your tools are more than just equipment, they are the foundation of your business. Keeping them secure is an important step in protecting your livelihood. If you would like support reviewing your policies or strengthening your risk strategy, our team is here to help.
